2001 Practice Test. This practice exam is perfect for practicing your AP English Language and Composition multiple choice. A total of 5 passages and 49 questions.

About the Exam

The Advanced Placement English Language and Composition course teaches students to write with richness and complexity in order to communicate clearly with advanced readers. The essays written in this course are to be less formulaic and more engaging to the reader. The focus is on the essay’s content and purpose as well as the intended reader. The students also need to be able to use a variety of research materials in their writing and be able to synthesize these various sources in an effective matter. Sources need to be cited in a critical manner and students must evaluate the legitimacy and purpose of the source.

The AP English Language Exam format is:
Multiple-Choice (60 minutes, 45% of final grade)
-54 multiple choice questions
Free-Response (135 minutes including a 15 minute reading period, 55% of final grade)
-3 essay questions including 1 synthesis question

AP Synthesis Essay: The synthesis question measures your ability to make a written argument by combining and citing a several different written sources and at least one visual source. The source material is provided in the test.

AP Argument Essay: The argument essay prompt requires you to compose an argument which is supported by evidence and reasoning from your own reading, observations, and experiences.

AP Analysis Essay: The analysis essay prompt requires you to analyze the rhetoric of a single text

When is the AP English Language and Composition Exam?

The AP English Language Exam date for the 2017/2018 school year is Wednesday, May 16th 2018 at 8 a.m. The test is only offered once per year.

Section I

Multiple Choice — 52 to 55 Questions | 1 Hour | 45% of Exam Score

  • Excerpts from non-fiction texts are accompanied by several multiple-choice questions

Section II

Free Response — 3 Free-Response Questions | 2 Hours, 15 Minutes (includes a 15-minute reading period) | 55% of Exam Score

This section has three prompts:

  • Synthesis: Students read several texts about a topic and create an argument that synthesizes at least three of the sources to support their thesis.
  • Rhetorical analysis: Students read a non-fiction text and analyze how the writer's language choices contribute to his or her purpose and intended meaning for the text.
  • Argument: Students create an evidence-based argument that responds to a given topic.

The total Section II time is 2 hours and 15 minutes. This includes a 15-minute reading period. The reading period is designed to provide students with time to develop thoughtful, well-organized responses. They may begin writing their responses before the reading period is over.
